             your hypocrisy – I’ve been trying to conceal

             system-blaming picnic.

             And I’m the Heidbummer today.’

Inspired by the bothy ballads of Scotland’s North East, playwright Elspeth Turner (The Idiot at the Wall, 2012) and acclaimed director Matthew Lenton (Vanishing Point) explore the fraying boundaries between past, present, and future. Weaving poetry, Doric, wild horses, and song, this courageous new play deftly wrestles with tradition, power, and the loneliness of modern life.

SPECTRETOWN

Development, September 2014

We've been busy in Cumbernauld developing SpectreTown, a new play set in the North East of Scotland. Writer Elspeth Turner and Director Emily Reutlinger began working with actors for two days of script development back in September....

And we began foraging around in the Archives at the School of Scottish Studies. Thanks to Neil, Caroline, Stuart and Cathlin for your help tracking down info. on The Horseman's Word.

Then in October we spent a week in the studio, working with actors Bridget McCann, Lucy Goldie and Mark Wood, and composer/musician Matt Regan to explore ideas for all the worlds in the play. Our PM Susan Martin was there too, keeping us in line. I think in this photo an actor turned her into a shop mannequin.....

One morning we had the great pleasure of welcoming the great bothy ballad singer, Scott Gardiner, into our rehearsal room! Scott sang and taught us a few songs, and we generally put him in the hot-seat on all things concerning The Horseman's Word. Thanks to our Production Manager Susan Martin for this photo!

At the end of the week, we presented a sharing night at the Traverse Theatre's Hothouse series (check out our Images page), followed by an amazing trip to Alford which saw us bring our work-in-progress to a wonderfully enthusiastic crowd at the Tullynessle and Forbes Hall. Big thank you to Emyr at North East Arts Touring for his help organizing this. Our youngest audience member was 2, and our oldest 102!! This amazing man has worked on farms, and with horses, all his life, and he very kindly let Elspeth interview him whilst conducting some research in Kemnay earlier this year. It was a great afternoon of theatre, chat, songs, tea and chat! Here's Aiyana being put to work :-)

This is the incomparable singer Sheena Blackhall You can't tell from the picture but she's singing an utterly filthy bothy ballad :-) She warned us all in advance and naeb'dy left!

The Idiot at the Wall first delighted audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe 2012, before completing an extensive tour of the Highlands and Islands in 2013.
